"the global political map can today be divided into a hierarchical class society consisting of six layers:

Globalisers Example Share of world pop.
Transnational Corporations - TNC Fortune Global 1,000 0.1%
The Postmodern Community - PMC OECD + 15%
Rapid Transition Societies - RTS China, India, Brazil + 5%

Localisers
Struggling Modern States - SMS Much of the Arab World 10%
Alienated Modern States - AMS North Korea, Burma, Russia? 5%
Premodern Societies - PMS The Bottom Billion 65%
...
The AMS are actively alienated from the PMC and see our globalising system as a threat. The task here is to convert them if possible and, failing this, to manage thier challenges to the globalising world. This will require a capability for hard power politics.
...
Towards the AMS, a capability to support hard power politics, both for Clausewitzian influence and possible direct military confrontation.""

“We have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its
population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so,we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction.”
- George Kennan, US State Department senior planning official, 1948

"United States Space Command
VISION FOR 2020
...
US Space Command--dominating the space dimension of military operations to protect US interests and investment. Integration Space Forces into warfighting capabilities across the full spectrum of conflict.
...
Historically, military forces have evolved to protect national interests and investments -- both military and economic. During the rise of sea commerce, nations built navies to protect and enhance their commercial interests. During the westward expansion of the continental United States, military outposts and the cavalry emerged to protect our wagon trains, settlements, and railroads.
...
Likewise, space forces will emerge to protect military and commercial national interests and investment in the space medium due to their increasing importance.
...
The Joint Vision 2010 operationalconcepts of dominant maneuver, precision engagement, full-dimensional protection, and focused logistics are enabled by information superiority and technological innovation. The end result of these enablers and concepts is Full Spectrum Dominance. Information superiority relies heavily upon space capabilities to collect, process, and disseminate an uninterrupted flow of information while denying an adversary’s ability to fully leverage the same.
...
The globalization of the world economy will also continue, with a widening between “haves” and “have-nots.”"

"Empire Without End
...
David Ramsay, South Carolina's delegate to the Continental Congress, wrote as early as 1778 that the grandeur of the American continent provided the basis for a realm that would make "the Macedonian, the Roman, and the British sink into insignificance." George Washington thought of the new country as a "rising" or an "infant" empire. Thomas Jefferson, who secured the vast Mississippi and Missouri valley corridors, famously envisaged an "empire of liberty.""
