It was only eight and a half months ago that we had liberated
Paris and now there was
PEACE.
I wrote to my wife the next day:
"And in Germany there was death, there was fear, there
was inner despair. The Germans showed no awareness of, or
even surface interest in, the peace. They were defeated,
crushed, and in a sense relieved that the nightmare was over.
It was startling to cross from Germany into France. On one
side death and destruction and hopelessness and total gray-
ness; on the other side gay flags, cheering, happiness. The Ger-
mans had massacred millions of innocent people; they had
inflicted unhappiness on hundreds of millions by killings, by
enslavement, and by separation of families. And now the
wheels of justice had turned, and the world celebrated the
crushing of the Nazi monster. By this act of defeat, the Ger-
mans were more cut off from the rest of the world than ever
before. They were no longer members of the community of
peoples but a race apart, cursed and feared as no race has
ever been in recorded history. Only the coming generation
of Germans can redeem their country. One must hope and
pray that they will not fail."
