Two 278th soldiers killed, two wounded in IED blast in Iraq
"Sweetwater, Monroe County (WVLT) - East Tennesseans are once again
getting reminders of the costs of the war in Iraq. People in two
area communities are dealing with the deaths of two 278th soldiers
and the injuries of two others.
Wounded in battles within the war-torn country were specialist
Charles Andy Newman of Madisonville and Dave Thomas of Monroe county.
Killed in action within the past few days were Specialist Joseph
Daniel Hunt of Sweetwater and ten year Army veteran Sergeant Victoir
Lieurance of Seymour (...)
Another Monroe county soldier was hurt in that same Iraqi explosion,
was Dave Thomas.
Calvin Thomas, the father of injured soldier David Thomas, attended a
meeting at the 278th offices in Sweetwater Wednesday morning to show
his support and make sure he knew the very latest about his son.
Thomas received severe head injuries in the attack with two scull
fractures and also partial amputation of his left leg above the

Vermont Guardsman killed by sniper in Iraq
Sgt. 1st Class Chris S. Chapin, 39, of Proctor was on a civil-affairs
mission at about 1 p.m. local time -- 5 a.m. in Vermont -- when the
sniper fired, Guard commander Maj. Gen. Martha Rainville said. The
bullet pierced Chapin's heart, and comrades could not save him, the
general said."

GI, Six Others Killed In Iraq Blast
"BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) A U.S. soldier, an American contractor and five
Iraqis were killed Tuesday when a suicide bomber detonated an
explosive device in a city north of Baghdad, the military said.
A statement said the blast occurred in Diyala Provincial Joint
Coordination Center in Baquba, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, at
12:50 p.m. The explosion also killed four Iraqi employees of the
center and one Iraqi police officer.
Nine U.S. soldiers were wounded, along with one U.S. civilian
contractor, six Iraqi civilians and four police officers. All the
wounded were evacuated to a military hospital for treatment, the
statement said."

2 From Polk Injured In Iraqi Bombing
"Two Polk County law enforcement officers who were called to duty in
Iraq were injured July 5 in an Iraqi car bomb attack, according to a
Polk County Sheriff's Office release.
Deputy Paul Buoniconti and Winter Haven police Officer Jose Sanchez
were injured while on patrol in Iraq's Al Anbar province, a hotbed of
insurgent combat. Sanchez was sent back to the United States to
recover, the release said.
Buoniconti and Sanchez, both Marines with Tampa's 4th Amphibious
Assault Battalion, were injured when a rigged car bomb exploded.
Buoniconti has since recovered from his injuries and will remain in
Iraq until October, the release said. Further information on
Sanchez's condition was not immediately available."
