"A terrorist network whose purpose is to undermine Russia is
organized and coordinated from London. There, under the wing of
British intelligence, thrive the world's most radical Islamic
terrorist organizations, such as the "Islamic Liberation Party", the
"Worldwide Islamic Front", the "Defenders of Shariat", the
"Mukhadjiri" movement, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and others.
I've named only those organizations which are forbidden in the
majority of Islamic countries. In London also are located the nerve
centers of Chechen terrorism along with the bank accounts of the
terrorists."

"As part of their support for Maskhadov’s government in exile, some
Western governments and human rights groups have managed (so far) to
forestall the extradition of the former president’s spokesman, Akhmed
Zakayev, who is wanted in Moscow on terrorism charges. The Danish
government refused to hand him over in December 2002 while he was
attending the World Chechen Congress in Copenhagen. Zakayev then
moved to London where the Russian government’s request for his
extradition was renewed. After a high-profile bail application he was
offered sanctuary by the actress and political activist Vanessa
Redgrave, who also put up £50,000 as surety. His case is presently
wending its way through the British courts. But, judging from the
tone of news reports which have ridiculed the Russian case, [See
David Hearst, “Extradition case becomes disaster for Russia” in The
Guardian, 15th September, 2003 www.guardian.co.uk .] Zakayev can
probably look forward to freedom and asylum in the UK some time soon.
As Mr. Zakayev awaited his day in court, another Russian was facing
legal proceedings in the UK. Oligarch Boris Berezovsky and two of his
associates also faced extradition - Berezovsky is wanted in Moscow
over allegations of fraud and embezzlement. However, after the UK
offered Berezovsky political asylum on 10th September 2003 claiming
to believe his allegations that the Russian state apparat would kill
him if he returned to Moscow, the extradition proceedings collapsed
the following month. Some might see this as a major snub to the
Russian government – the decision to grant asylum is made by the
British Home Secretary, not the courts."
