They spoke to King Udeno: "Majesty, it is told, that our venerable teacher Anando is sitting under a tree, not far from here, we want to visit the venerable Anando." "Good, may you visit the asket Anando."
There the playmates of the King Udeno went to the venerable Anando, greeted him with honor, and sat down at the side. The venerable Anando tought and encouraged, cheerfully and joyfully, the sideward sitting playmates of King Udeno with a speech of the Dharma.
Very happy to have received a teaching from the venerable Anando, blessed with joy and happiness, they gave him 500 pieces of underwear as a gift. Then, happy about the words of the venerable Anando, the playmates of King Udeno rose from their seats, walked around Anando clockwise and returned to King Udeno.
King Udeno saw them coming and asked: "Have you met the asket Anando?" "We have met him, Majesty" "Did you give him something as a gift?" "We have given him 500 underwear as a gift". King Udeno criticized this, was angry: " How can this asket Anando accept 500 underwear as a gift? Will he open up a clothes shop and sell them?"
King Udeno then went to the venerable Anando, exchanged polite, friendly words of greeting with him and sat down sideward. Sitting sideward, King Udeno spoke to the venerable Anando: "Anando, did my playmates come to you?" "Yes, your playmates came to me, great king". "But did they leave something as a gift for the venerable Anando?" "Yes, great king, they gave a present, 500 underwear they gave to me, great king." "But what will you do with so many clothes?" "I will distribute them among the monks, whose robes are worn down" "And what will you do with the worn-down clothes?" " I will let them be converted to raincoats" "And what will you do with the old raincoats?" "Thereof I will make covers for matraces" "But what will you do with the old matrace covers?" "Cushions covers, great king" "And with the cushion covers?" "Floor carpets, great king" "and from the old floor carpets?" "Foot cleaners" "and from the old foot cleaners, Anando?" "Cleaning clothes, great king" "And from the old cleaning clothes?" "These are torn apart into their fibers, mixed up with clay and used as a floor material, great king".
So spoke King Udeno: "These askets, the sons of the Shakyers, they use everything thoroughly and never let anything go off!" And he gave the venerable Anando additional 500 underwear of woven cloth.
This was the first time that the venerable Anando received a gift of 1000 woven clothes.
