A competition for Young Austrian media artists, for innovative design concepts in different media, interactive works, and multimedia productions. Amateurs and professionals are invited to compete for five cash prizes, issued to both commercial and art projects.

Transmediale 98 - 11. Videofest
Berlin, Deutschland
event: 12. - 22. February 1998
The Podewil hosts the second transmediale and the eleventh VideoFest. Associated again with the Berlin Film Festival, the VideoFest will attract thousands of visitors and hundreds of accredited FilmFest guests, thus making the Podewil an international meeting place for the creative talents in media. The festival will be organized by transmedia and Podewil, with support by the Senate of Berlin, the European Commission, and private sponsors.
In 1998, a focal issue of the transmediale will be a "stock taking of seeing". Renowned artists and experts will take into critical review the past 30 years of video culture; in the field of computer animation and multimedia it will present the state of the art, and in the television section it will concentrate on outstanding stations and personalities of German TV history. The transmediale will award three prizes for outstanding works in the fields of video, television and multimedia.
On Feb. 17 there will be a retrospective and tribute to Lynn Hershman, organized and conducted by Rudolf Frielling. CONCEIVING ADA, Hershman's new feature film, will be shown at the Filmfest!

WDR Cyberstar

An International competition and cash prize for concepts aimed at creating interactive ways of communication which reflect and utilize today's state of technology. Categories include Internet, Television, and State will be awarded prizes totaling to DM 35,000.

AVATAR: Of Postmodern Times and Multiple Identities

An exhibition and symposium, organized as a collaboration between Axis, De Balie, Maatshappij voor Oude en Nieuwe Media and Paradox, Amsterdam, it will be held in the Oude Kerk (a 12th C church in Amsterdam's red light district). The short listed program is extraordinary!

The 6th Celebration of Independent Video and New Media, with screenings at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), an on-line exhibition on the Freewaves' website. Special projects will be screened on Billboard Live!, an outdoor large-scale video screen located on Sunset Strip. Many other events in L.A. will take place, too. Mac-compatible CD ROMs, NTSC 3/4 inch or VHS videotapes, or 1-2 page proposals for installations and performances, with support materials (video documentation, slides, etc.) can be sent.
