Schedule of Conferences and Festivals recommended by pop~Tarts
These are recommendations, and reflect the upcoming travels and program participation of pop~Tarts in 1997. It is always necessary to make hard choices, so many interesting events overlap. So this personal selection of media events shows our current plan, and is not (necessarily) a critque (or cause for concern if you plan to attend or are invited to another festival). Our choices are based on our experiences at some of these festivals and conferences, and what we can find out about them online.
Pop~TARTS invites your feedback. We are also happy to meet you at any of events we attend. But, be aware - things happen - and sometimes it is necessary to change plans at the last moment. For this reason, we advise that you mail us in advance for our accurate arrival and departure dates. We hope our selections help you to make decisions and travel plans for 1997.
ALL pop~Event recommendations can be found online, so please check the URL and contact the venue directly!
Pop~EVENT RECOMMENDATIONS:
June 5 - 6
Oslo, 6th Cyberconf
A closed event. Attendance is based on proposals submitted from theoreticians and practitioners who address the social, political and cultural implications of cyberspace from a critical standpoint as well as a practical standpoint. It will take place at the University of Oslo. Deadline for proposals for participation - March 10, 1997
June 21- Sept. 29
Kassel,Documenta X
The Tenth Exhibition in this international exhibition, held every five years in Kassel, Germany. DX is curated by Catherine David, and the 1997 event is to be a critical review of the past 50 years and an interdisciplinary look into the future. So far, most of the media artists are top-secret! Press conference for the Internet projects at DX is March 21 - somewhere in Kassel.
July 5 - 6
Wales, Consciousness Reframed Symposium - Art and Consciousness in the Post-Biological Era caiiamind.nsad.newport.ac.uk
Organised by CAiiA, the Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts, University of Wales College, Newport, UK, this is essentially a closed conference of participants who submitted proposals (deadline was December 1).
It is a controversial event, due in part to the high cost of the conference plus travel costs, and to the disasterous attempt at starting a mailing list that filled everybodys mailbox with unedited stream of consciousness ideas between a few outspoken men. But, a substantial list of participants has nonetheless been circulated.
August 8 -10
Almere, The Netherlands, HIP - Hacking In Progress:.www.hip97.nl/
Girls, please take part!
This conference has no audience, no press, but does have active participants.
Hactick in Netherlends was the starter, and people as Rob Gongrijp were initiators. This time, girls will take part, and we will enter the last male domain in the networld - and pop~Tarts will take part for sure to learn and to discuss.
HIP will happen on the same days, in an event called `Beyond Hope', a hacker convention in New York, organized by the people of 2600 Magazine (http://www.2600.com/). There will be audio and video links between both events, and cool gadgets will further enhance your sense of `grassroots telepresence. This will be a twin-event in the true sense of the word.
